Evaluation and Treatment
ADULTS
Rebecca has worked as a Speech Language Pathologist in Long Term Care Facilities in North Central Indiana since graduating from ISU in 1992. She enjoys working with the adult populations, including those who had experienced life changing events such as a stroke, Parkinson’s Disease, Traumatic Brain Injury, or Alzheimer’s Disease. Rebecca connects with the clients, and helps them to learn to communicate effectively with their loved ones and care givers. She has also treated clients with cognitive linguistic deficits, memory, and safety awareness, for residents planning to return home. In addition, she has worked with clients with dysphagia, training adult patients to learn to chew, swallow, and safely eat again.
CHILDREN
More recently, “Miss Becky” has had the pleasure of serving the K-12 Special Needs population, as an SLP in the Howard County School Corporation through Kokomo Area Special Education Cooperative. She worked with the teachers to maximize the verbal and non-verbal communication of students. The skills which she developed in the adult neuro populations transferred well to the special needs populations such as: Autism, Down Syndrome, and Cerebral Palsy. She uses games and fun activities to focus on natural communication skills. She connects with the students in a way makes them want to come to Speech Therapy
KEY TO SUCCESS
Rebecca incorporates the family and caregivers in the plan of care, training, and therapy. She is happy to answer questions about the client’s medical issues as they relate to therapy and to explain the “method to her madness” as it pertains to the therapeutic strategies. Caregiver participation is a key element in maximizing progress and to carry skills over from therapy sessions to home life.
Language Therapy – incorporates a variety of cueing strategies, motor skills, signs and gestures, to stimulate language function in a non-verbal or minimally verbal client.
Oral Motor:
Oral Motor Therapy- focuses on the strength, control, and automatic motor movements of the tongue, lips, and other structures, as needed for speech and swallowing function.
Chewing and Swallowing
Dysphagia Therapy- focuses on improving ability to safely chew and swallow foods and liquids, reducing the risk of aspiration/ aspiration pneumonia, and tolerating food textures.
